What does an IRS CP13 notice mean?
A CP13 tells you the IRS corrected errors on your return, and after the changes you neither owe additional tax nor are entitled to a refund — your account nets to zero. The notice explains what was adjusted and why the expected refund disappeared.
Why did you receive a CP13?
The IRS recalculated your return — often a math error, a disallowed or reduced credit, or corrected withholding — and the result wiped out the refund you anticipated.
How to respond to a CP13 notice
Review the explanation carefully against your records. If you agree, no action is needed. If you believe a refund is still due, contact the IRS within 60 days and provide documentation supporting your original calculation, such as W-2s or proof of credits.
What happens if you ignore it?
The adjusted, zero-balance result stands. There is no collection risk because nothing is owed, but you forfeit a legitimate refund if the IRS's correction was wrong and you do not dispute it in time.
Common resolutions
- Review the changes
- Dispute if you disagree
