What does an IRS CP2057 notice mean?
A CP2057 informs you that information on your return does not match data the IRS received and asks you to review it. Unlike a CP2000, it often does not propose a dollar change; instead it prompts you to determine whether you need to file an amended return to correct an error.
Why did you receive a CP2057?
The IRS spotted a difference between your return and third-party reporting — perhaps unreported income or a mismatched figure — and wants you to verify which is correct.
How to respond to a CP2057 notice
Review the flagged item against your records. If your original return was wrong, file an amended return (Form 1040-X) to correct it and pay any additional tax. If your return was right, keep documentation explaining the difference in case the IRS follows up; you generally do not need to send anything unless the notice instructs you to.
What happens if you ignore it?
If a real discrepancy exists and you do nothing, the IRS may later issue a CP2000 proposing a formal change, with penalties and interest. Addressing it now is simpler and cheaper.
Common resolutions

- File an amended return
