What does an IRS CP27 notice mean?
A CP27 informs you that, based on your return, you may be eligible for the Earned Income Credit even though you did not claim it, and asks you to verify eligibility so the IRS can pay it. It is essentially the IRS offering you a credit you may have missed (for taxpayers without a qualifying child).
Why did you receive a CP27?
Your reported income and circumstances suggest you qualify for the EIC, but you did not claim it on your return.
How to respond to a CP27 notice
Complete and return the worksheet or form included with the notice to confirm your eligibility. If you qualify, the IRS will issue the credit, often as a refund. If you do not meet the requirements, you do not need to do anything.
What happens if you ignore it?
You simply forgo a credit you may have been entitled to; there is no penalty for not responding, but you lose potential money.
