What does an IRS CP75 notice mean?
A CP75 notifies you that the IRS is auditing the Earned Income Credit (and sometimes related credits) on your return and is holding the related portion of your refund until you substantiate your claim. The notice lists the documents the IRS needs to verify eligibility.
Why did you receive a CP75?
Your EIC claim was selected for examination, often because of questions about a qualifying child's relationship or residency, your filing status, or your income figures.
How to respond to a CP75 notice
Send the requested documentation by the deadline — proof of the qualifying child's relationship and residency (such as school, medical, or childcare records showing your shared address), and proof of earned income. Organize the documents to match the IRS's checklist. If the rules are complex, consider professional help.
What happens if you ignore it?
The IRS will disallow the EIC, reducing or eliminating your refund and possibly creating a balance due. Improper EIC claims can also lead to being barred from claiming the credit for two or ten years.
